The Brazilian federal government has drastically reduced in recent years the hiring of federal civil servants, focusing instead on filling temporary vacancies. From 2016 to 2020, the number of workers entering the public sector declined by 42.11%, to 45,976 from 79,397, according to data collected by the Economy Ministry. The trend was intensified in 2020 because of the pandemic.

BNDES announces record profit of $3.7 bn in 2020
The National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) recorded a net profit of R$20.7 billion ($3.7 bn) in 2020, resulting from the public offering of Petrobras shares held in February, the sale of Vale and Suzano shares, and revenue from dividends from companies that received investments. The amount represents a 17% increase over the 2019 profit: R$17.7 billion ($3.1 bn). The data was presented in Rio de Janeiro, by the bank’s board of directors, in an interview with virtual transmission.

Consigned credit volume exceeds $78 bn
The volume of consigned credit broke a record in January of this year, with R$ 442.8 billion ($78 bn) contracted. According to data from the Central Bank, this is the highest amount ever recorded for this type of loan. In one year, the total value increased 14%, coinciding with the period of the coronavirus pandemic. In January 2020 it was R$ 388.6 billion ($69 bn). The modality is granted to those who have salary, retirement or pension credited to current account.

BR Distribuidora was included in the Sustainability Yearbook 2021, prepared by S&P Global ESG, one of the world’s leading providers of data, research, benchmarks and financial analysis. The company was listed among the world’s best performing sustainable companies in the retail sector (Retailing). More than seven thousand companies were evaluated and only 15% of those which obtained the best score in their sector were mentioned in the publication.

Parts shortage in Brazil stops automakers for up to 2 months
In Brazil, the first to stop for lack of electronic circuits was Honda’s factory in Sumaré (SP), for a week in February and ten days this month. General Motors has suspended all production at the Gravataí (RS) complex, where Onix, the best selling car in the country, is produced. All employees are on collective holiday until day 20. According to Anfavea, international experts estimate that the supply crisis should result in a fall of 3% to 5% of global sales this year, expected between 76 million and 78 million vehicles.
